On Monday, August 22, 2011, Bus West Inc. hosted a live-you drive demo of the first commercially available hybrid school bus manufactured by Thomas Built Buses. The demo took place at the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District office. School District Transportation Directors were able to test drive the bus, which utilizes an electric drive motor from 0 - 35 mph. The diesel engine is a conventional compression ignition engine built by Cummins Diesel. Currently, the California Air Resources Board is offering a $40,000.00 voucher for School Districts only toward the purchase of a new hybrid bus.
